Siemens has signed a framework agreement with T-Mobile International for its music download technology for mobile handsets. This makes “Music2You” from Siemens the preferred solution for all T-Mobile subsidiaries throughout the world. T-Mobile Germany was the first to take advantage of the opportunity: With its “Mobile Jukebox” this operator offers the first combined wireless/wireline solution for downloading music to both mobile handsets and computers. The Siemens “Music2You” technology already serves as the platform for the successful “musicload” Internet service from T-Online, which has mushroomed into Germany’s largest offer of digital music on the Internet.

“Music2You” enables titles to be previewed on a mobile handset and then purchased and downloaded full length over the mobile network. The tracks that have been bought can also be downloaded at home via a PC and then burned to a CD or played on any customary WMA/MP3 player. The prerequisite for mobile music downloads is an end-user device that features an AAC+ player and sufficient memory, like the Siemens S75. In addition, the device also has to support the Digital Rights Management (DRM) standard, which protects music files against unauthorized copying. The “Mobile Jukebox” is the first convergent service of its kind for downloading music over both wireless and wireline networks.

The selection of music offerings comprises hundreds of thousands of titles from a variety of major labels. The cost of the downloads is charged to the user’s wireless telephony bill.

“Music downloads are one of the most interesting applications for GPRS, EDGE and W-CDMA networks, as they allow full the necessary download speeds. The market for digital music is going to expand, and the requirements placed upon the mobile networks will continue to rise. We are proud that T-Mobile, one of the world’s leading mobile communication providers, has chosen to partner with us in implementing its music download service,” said Giulio Panzera, the “Music2You” Project Leader at Siemens Switzerland.
