The Siemens brand has a long history of developing and inventing new standards in technology. Ever since the founding of the company by German engineer Werner von Siemens, the name Siemens became a synonym for innovation. From the introduction of the first long-distance electrical telegraph line in 1847 to the discovery of the dynamo-electric principle in 1866, Werner von Siemens never stopped to explore new areas of technology.

A challenge that still drives Siemens engineers worldwide until today. One of the most progressive developments in mobile telephony came from this innovative think-pool.

In 1985 the first ever public mobile telecommunications network was activated. While prior mobile connections had to be reactivated once the user moved from one transmission pole to the next, this new so-called C-net was able to deliver continuous transmission and hence continuous phone-calls. Of course, Siemens was once again part of this revolution in technology and offered the Siemens C1 telephone. At over six kilos and a size as big as a suitcase, these first mobile phones were not truly “handy” to carry.

With the introduction of GSM networks, the world of mobile communication changed.

All of the sudden everyone had access to making phone-calls from wherever. Needless to say that Siemens was once again part of this evolution with the Siemens S1 – one of the first GSM mobile phones in the world. And the next breakthrough innovation by Siemens was just around the corner: In 1997 the first ever mobile telephone with color display was presented by Siemens. A lot has changed from the early 4 color days of this Siemens S10 Color to modern models that feature up to 262,000 colors.

Another groundbreaking invention for mobile telephony came in the year 2000.

That’s when Siemens launched the first mobile phone with a built-in MP3 player – the Siemens SL45. This elegant and stylish model marked the beginning of the unification of entertainment and mobile communication.

And of course, the development of innovations continues at Siemens. Currently Siemens engineers are working on such exciting projects as DVB-H devices. With these mobile multi-taskers, one can watch TV on the go, record digital video clips, make phone-calls and much more. So be ready for the next generation of state-of-the-art mobile innovations by Siemens.
